Metro uses shootout to best Cleveland, 6-5 (3-2 SO)

Trevor Bardallis scored the clinching goal in a shootout, and the Metro Jets picked up the extra point in a 6-5 (3-2 SO) win over the Cleveland Jr. Lumberjacks.

The two teams needed 10 turns to complete the shootout. Cleveland got shootout goals from Fred West and David Fassbender. In addition to the clincher, Metro got shootout goals from Steve Klisz and Doug Andrews.

The Jets overcame a three-goal deficit to capture the victory. Metro fell behind 5-2 after a power play goal by the Jr. Lumberjacks' West at 17:47 in the second period. The Jets tied things up at 5-5 on a goal by Chris Hellebuyck at 15:44 in the third period.

Metro forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up seven minors and one major for 29 minutes in penalty time. The Jets had been averaging 22.0 minutes in penalties per game. Metro forced Cleveland goalie Alexander Larson to work between the pipes, taking 52 shots. The Jets took advantage of the Jr. Lumberjacks' penalties, tallying two goals off of three power play opportunities.

Metro was helped by Matt Stirling, who had two goals. Stirling scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 10:05 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Metro. The Jets had gotten the advantage when Cleveland's Kevin Mansolill was sent off for tripping. Tommy Kilgore provided the assist. Stirling's next tally on the power play made the score 5-4 Cleveland with 6:30 left in the third period. Metro earned a power play opportunity when Blake Hamilton was put in the box for slashing. Kilgore picked up the assist. Metro additionally got points from Andrews, who also registered one goal and one assist. In addition, Metro received assists from Josh Beleski, who had two and Adam Reid, Cameron Bazin, and Branden Morganroth, who contributed one a piece.

The the Jr. Lumberjacks penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled five minors and two majors for 40 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 17.0 minutes per game Cleveland had been spending in the box. The Jr. Lumberjacks kept the Jets' goalie busy throughout the game, and Andrew Brownlee made 30 saves on 35 shots.

Cleveland was helped by Cameron Dimmitt, who finished with two goals and one assist. Dimmitt scored the first of his two goals at 6:28 into the second period to make the score 2-2. Kyle Fink assisted on the tally. Dimmitt's next tally made the score 4-2 Cleveland with 11:17 left in the second period. West picked up the assist. Cleveland also got points from Bo Zinner, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Other players who recorded assists for Cleveland were Andrew Sprouse and Andrew Mitch, who each chipped in one.

Alexander Larson made 46 saves for the Jr. Lumberjacks on 51 shots. Cleveland registered one goal on four power play opportunities.
