Odessa erases deficit to stun Corpus Christi, 5-4AmericanBank Center Sat, Feb 25, 2012 Story by Narrative Science.
The Corpus Christi IceRays could not hold down the Odessa Jackalopes, and Jackalopes erased a two-goal deficit en route to a 5-4 win. Odessa let multiple leads slip away before eventually digging out of a two hole to pick up the win. The Jackalopes took a 3-2 advantage on a goal by Tyler Minx at 2:59 in the third period. Odessa found itself down 2-0 after Corpus Christi's Jonathan Grebosky put the puck home at 16:16 in the first period. After knotting things up at 4-4 on a power play goal by Brandon Smith at 18:26 in the third, the Jackalopes got the game-winner from Ryan Doucet at 19:53 in the third period. Doucet had two goals and one assist to lead Odessa. Doucet scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 5:19 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Corpus Christi. A tripping penalty on Joe Smereck had put the Jackalopes on the power play. Doucet's next tally on the power play made the score 5-4 Odessa with seven seconds left in the third period. Tyler Poulsen assisted on the tally. Odessa outdid its season average for goals scored. The Jackalopes average 2.4 goals per game. Odessa's offense was clicking better than usual and put 32 shots on goal during the game, better than the 22.1 shots per game it averages. Odessa also got a goal from Ryan Atkinson as well. More assists for Odessa came via Lawrence Cornellier, Alex Ostrowski, and Darren Lapic, who each chipped in one. The IceRays' offense rang up 34 shots on the Jackalopes' net. Corpus Christi was helped by Eric Purcell, who registered one goal. Purcell scored 5:28 into the third period to make the score 3-3. AJ Jarosz picked up the assist. Phil Pietroniro also scored for Corpus Christi. In addition, Corpus Christi received assists from Beau Walker, who had two and Chris Taff, Michael Dery, and Travis Maxwell, who contributed one a piece. Connor Hellebuyck rejected 30 shots on goal for Odessa. The Jackalopes totaled 19 minutes in penalty time with two minors and three majors and went 1-for-1 on the power play. Anthony Stolarz made 27 saves for the IceRays on 31 shots. Corpus Christi totaled 17 minutes in penalty time with one minor and three majors and went 1-for-2 on the power play.
