Amarillo outlasts Texas, 5-3Amarillo Sat, Feb 25, 2012 Story by Narrative Science.
In a game where neither team could get a cushion, the Amarillo Bulls escaped with a 5-3 victory over the Texas Tornado. Amarillo gained the winning advantage on a goal by John Rey 16:37 into the third period and hung on until final buzzer. With three goals and two assists between them, Rey and TJ Sarcona teamed up to power the Bulls' offense. Rey racked up two goals and Sarcona also added one goal and two assists. The defensemen of Amarillo were also effective in Texas' zone, and came away with two goals. With 40 shots on target during the contest, the Bulls exceeded the 34 shots they average per game this year. Amarillo also got points from Sarcona, who also had one goal and two assists and Matt Johnson, who also registered one goal and one assist. Amarillo got a goal from Mike Erickson as well. Other players who recorded assists for Amarillo were Clint Carlisle, who had one and John Gustafsson, who had two. The Tornado stifled Amarillo's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Texas' offense was clicking better than usual and put 41 shots on goal during the game, better than the 27 shots per game it averages. The Tornado were helped by Jack Prince, who grabbed two goals and one assist. Prince scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 3:06 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Texas had taken the advantage when the Bulls' Ryan Taylor got sent off for abuse of officials. Marc Biggs assisted on the tally. Prince's next tally on the power play made the score 2-2 with 36 seconds left in the first period. Jordan Greenberg provided the assist. Texas additionally got points from Prince, who also tallied two goals and one assist. Drew Allen also scored for Texas. Gregg Gruehl made 38 saves for Amarillo on 41 shots. The Bulls totaled 25 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major and went 0-for-3 on the power play. The Tornado's Frederick Leisner stopped 35 shots out of the 39 that he faced. Texas totaled 11 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one major and went 1-for-5 on the power play.
