Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the New Mexico Mustangs defeated the Wichita Falls Wildcats in a shootout 4-3 (2-1 SO). The two teams needed 12 turns to complete the shootout. Wichita Falls' shootout goal was scored by George Pagonis. New Mexico also got a shootout goal from Cody Walsh.The Mustangs were led by Adam Chapie, who racked up one goal and one assist. Chapie scored on the power play 10:23 into the first period to make the score 1-0 New Mexico. New Mexico had taken the advantage when the Wildcats' Jason Eddy got sent off for elbowing. Tate Rusk provided the assist. The Mustangs put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Wichita Falls to score on any of its four power plays. By firing 33 shots on goal, New Mexico exceeded the 23 shots it averages per game this year. New Mexico additionally got points from Chapie, who also had one goal and one assist. Bill Kent also scored for New Mexico. Other players who recorded assists for New Mexico were Mike Chen and Patrick Anderson, who each chipped in one. The Wildcats forced the Mustangs goalie Jake Stafford to work between the pipes, taking 41 shots. Wichita Falls was helped by Jake Townsend, who grabbed one goal. Townsend scored 15:51 into the second period to make the score 1-1. Ben Kucera assisted on the tally. Wichita Falls got a goal from Zach Pochiro as well. More assists for Wichita Falls came via Matt Purmal, Tyler Hope, Renato Engler, and Pagonis, who contributed one each. New Mexico's Stafford stopped 38 shots out of the 41 that he faced. The Mustangs incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. Matt Leon made 29 saves for the Wildcats on 32 shots. Wichita Falls incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors.
