Gibson leads Amarillo over Texas, 7-3

The Amarillo Bulls' Greg Gibson had a big offensive game, scoring two goals and contributing two assists in his team's 7-3 win over the Texas Tornado.

Gibson scored on the power play at 16:29 into the first period to make the score 3-0 Amarillo and again while 15:04 into the second to make the score 5-2 Amarillo.

Amarillo took advantage of Texas' penalties and slotted in four goals on the power play.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 25 seconds into the third period. Three fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

The Bulls were often in penalty trouble, totaling nine minors and one major for 33 minutes in penalty time. Amarillo had been averaging 27 minutes in penalties per game. The Bulls' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on seven Texas power plays. Amarillo outdid its season average for goals scored. The Bulls average four goals per game. The 51 shots that Amarillo put on net surpassed the Bulls' average of 36 shots per game this season.

Amarillo additionally got points from Brooks Behling, who also had one goal and two assists, John Gustafsson, who also racked up one goal and one assist, and Gibson, who also registered two goals and two assists. Others who scored for Amarillo included Tyler Deresky, who had one and Omar Mullan, who had two. In addition, Amarillo received assists from Karl Beckman, Joe Kozlak, and Ryan Taylor, who contributed one each and John Rey and TJ Sarcona, who each chipped in two.

The Tornado racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with four minors and three majors for 43 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 21 minutes per game Texas had been spending in the box. The Tornado relied on a core group of players for most of their offense, as Marc Biggs, Jordan Greenberg and Taylor Herndon took 20 of the team's 33 shots.

Jack Prince also scored for Texas. Other players who recorded assists for Texas were Mico Solorzano, who had two and Drew Allen, Justin Greenberg, and Mitchell McPherson, who contributed one each.

Amarillo's Mike Taffe stopped 30 shots out of the 33 that he faced. For the Bulls, Kozlak was ejected from the game. Texas' starting goalie, Frederick Leisner, made 35 saves and finished with the loss before he was taken out in favor of Joakim Jutras, who stopped nine shots. The Tornado ran into disciplinary problems during the contest, and Michael Hoy was ejected from the game.
