Topeka beats Fairbanks 4-3 after comeback scareBig Dipper Ice Arena Fri, Feb 17, 2012 Story by Narrative Science.
The Topeka RoadRunners survived a determined comeback attempt by the Fairbanks Ice Dogs on the way to a 4-3 win. Topeka made the score 4-2 on a goal by Ben Bahe at 19:08 in the third period, and Fairbanks got as close as 4-3 when Sean ORourke scored 19:44 into the third period. Bahe had a great game for the RoadRunners, netting two goals. Topeka stifled the Ice Dogs' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The RoadRunners' defensemen also contributed in the offensive zone and ended up with 16 shots between them. By firing 36 shots on goal, Topeka exceeded the 22 shots it averages per game this year. Fairbanks could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 14 minutes in penalties during the game. The leading offender was Justin Woods, who totaled two minutes in penalty time with one minor. The Ice Dogs' defensemen bolstered Fairbanks' offensive attack, as they bombarded Peter Traber with 13 shots. With 32 shots on target during the contest, the Ice Dogs exceeded the 27 shots they average per game this year. Topeka got a goal from Dan Dupell as well. More assists for Topeka came via Cory Ramsey, who had two, Brian Christie, who had three, and James Ring and Jake Lynes, who each chipped in one. Fairbanks was led by Logan Wendling, who had two goals. Wendling scored the first of his two goals at 9:22 into the second period to make the score 1-0 Fairbanks. Pavlo Padakin assisted on the tally. Wendling's next tally made the score 2-2 with 15:55 left in the third period. Colton Wolter picked up the assist. In addition, Fairbanks received assists from Russell Finch, Gabe Levin, and Anton Racklin, who contributed one each. The RoadRunners put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Ice Dogs to score on any of their seven power plays. Other players who recorded assists for Fairbanks were. Dupell also scored for Topeka. More assists for Topeka came via. Topeka's Traber stopped 29 shots out of the 32 that he faced. The RoadRunners incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. Alex Fons made 32 saves for Fairbanks on 35 shots. Topeka registered two goals on six power play opportunities.
