Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Smiths Falls Bears defeated the Hawkesbury Hawks in a shootout 5-4 (1-0 SO). The shootout featured five attempts between both teams.Smiths Falls came back from a two-goal deficit to capture the victory. The Bears was down 4-2 after a goal by Hawkesbury's Carl Faucher at 5:08 in the second period. Smiths Falls knotted things up at 4-4 on a power play goal by Matt Robertson at 7:57 in the third period. The Bears' offense rang up 47 shots on the Hawks' net. Smiths Falls could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 14 minutes in penalties during the game. Smiths Falls also got a goal from Dean Galasso as well. More assists for Smiths Falls came via Connor McLaren, who had two and Robbie Hall and Tyler Akeson, who each chipped in one. Hawkesbury made Bears' netminders to work between the pipes, ripping 38 shots and forcing 34 saves. Mackenzie Sawyer made 27 stops and Laine Parent made seven. The Hawks' penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as Hawkesbury finished with 18 penalty minutes. The Hawks were helped by Sebastian Meltzer, who finished with two goals. Meltzer scored the first of his two goals at 2:12 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Brett Costello assisted on the tally. Meltzer's next tally made the score 2-2 with 10:56 left in the first period. Hawkesbury earned a power play opportunity when Patrick Sexton was put in the box for unsportsmanlike conduct. Yanik Laliberte provided the assist. Other players who recorded assists for Hawkesbury were Anthony Sanniti, who had one. The Bears registered two goals on six power play opportunities. Carmine Guerriero made 42 saves for the Hawks on 46 shots. Hawkesbury registered one goal on four power play opportunities.
