Cumberland takes care of Kanata early, wins 8-2Navan Memorial Centre Sun, Feb 26, 2012 Story by Narrative Science.
A four-goal first period deficit cost the Kanata Stallions, which could not recover and fell to the Cumberland Grads, 8-2. Cumberland got the win thanks to a great game by Eric Clitsome, who had four goals and one assist. Clitsome's first goal came 8:43 into the first period. He then added goals at 7:08 into the second, at 16:44 into the second, and at 4:42 into the third. The Grads' penalty kill excelled, as Cumberland gave up one goal despite allowing seven power plays. The Grads made Stallions' goaltenders to work hard to keep the puck out of the net, getting 48 shots and forcing 40 saves. Brandon Lane made 14 stops and Brock Crossthwaite made 26. Cumberland found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. This season, the Grads average three goals per contest. Cumberland was forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as it racked up 28 penalty minutes. The leading offender was Keegan Harper, who totaled 11 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one major. Cumberland additionally got points from Clitsome, who also registered four goals and one assist, Marc Beckstead, who also grabbed one goal and one assist, and Sean Bamford, who also finished with one goal and four assists. Nick Martin also scored for Cumberland. More assists for Cumberland came via Jeremy Nichols, who had two, Daniel Walsh, who had three, and Matt Allan and Travis Douglas, who each chipped in one. Kanata forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up eight minors and two majors for 26 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 20 minutes per game the Stallions had been spending in the box. Kanata kept the Grads' goalie busy throughout the game, and Robin Billingham made 36 saves on 38 shots. The Stallions were helped by Jeff Stanton, who had one goal. Stanton scored 5:59 into the third period to make the score 8-2 Cumberland. Kanata got a goal from Ryan Donnelly as well. Other players who recorded assists for Kanata were Curtis Watson and Alex Robinson, who contributed one each. Cumberland registered two goals on seven power play opportunities. Team's Harper and Dillon Harrington were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game. For Kanata, Devin Cobbold and Stanton were ejected from the contest.
