Stanton's big game bests Ottawa in 4-1 Kanata win

Jeff Stanton was all over the ice for the Kanata Stallions, as he tallied two goals and one assist in Kanata's 4-1 win over the Ottawa Senators.

Stanton scored at 3:17 into the second period to make the score 1-0 Kanata and again while short handed 9:25 into the third to make the score 3-1 Kanata.

Ottawa was stymied by the Stallions netminder Brandon Lane, who stopped 31 shots during the victory. Lane certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 3.34 entering the contest.

Both teams had a hard time staying out of the box, and they combined for 17 penalties during the game.

Kanata stifled the Senators' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Stallions were forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as they racked up 16 penalty minutes. The leading offender was Cole Hutchinson, who totaled six minutes in penalty time with three minors.

Kanata also got points from Curtis Watson, who also finished with one goal and one assist and Stanton, who also had two goals and one assist. Kanata got a goal from Brent Bisdee as well. In addition, Kanata received assists from Alex Robinson, who had two and Derian Plouffe and Mike Zajac, who contributed one each.

Ottawa did not reach the goal total it has come to expect this season. The Senators average three goals per game. Kanata was unable to stop Ottawa from sending pucks towards the net, and the Senators eventually piled up 32 shots on goal. Ottawa could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 18 minutes in penalties during the game. The leading offender was Derek Brown, who totaled four minutes in penalty time with two minors.

The Senators were led by Josh Pitt, who scored the team's only goal. Pitt scored 13:53 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Kanata. Max Fiedler picked up the assist.

The Stallions registered two goals on five power play opportunities. Ed Zdolshek took the loss and made 18 saves before being replaced by Miguel Laroche who made zero saves. Ottawa registered zero goals on four power play opportunities.
