Hawkesbury beats Kemptville 2-1 after comeback scare

The Hawkesbury Hawks survived a determined comeback attempt by the Kemptville 73s on the way to a 2-1 win.

Hawkesbury took a 2-0 lead during the third period, only to have Kemptville storm back on a Stevie Ray Adams goal 19:29 into the third period to pull to one goal down.

Sebastian Meltzer was all over the ice for the Hawks, as he finished with two goals in the win.

Hawkesbury's penalty kill excelled, as the Hawks gave up one goal despite allowing eight power plays.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 17:19 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

Hawkesbury was often in penalty trouble, totaling 11 minors and three majors for 37 minutes in penalty time. The Hawks had been averaging 28 minutes in penalties per game. The 73s were unable to stop Hawkesbury from sending pucks towards the net, and the Hawks eventually piled up 40 shots on goal.

Other players who recorded assists for Hawkesbury were Stefano Momesso, who had two and Stephen Hrehoriak and Brett Costello, who each chipped in one.

The Kemptville penalty box was a busy place as the team totaled eight minors and three majors for 31 minutes in penalty time. The 73s surpassed its season average of 19 penalty minutes per game. Kemptville's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on six Hawkesbury power plays.

More assists for Kemptville came via Eric Cornel and Steven Genier, who contributed one each.

Michael Comitini turned away 17 pucks between the pipes for Hawkesbury. Team's Ty Perry, Antonio Roumeliotis, and Holden Anderson were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game. The 73s' Travis Wilkins stopped 38 shots out of the 40 that he faced. For Kemptville, Matt Shackell, Eric Malloy, and Lucas Gonu were ejected from the contest.
