Nepean survives Cumberland comeback, wins 4-3Navan Memorial Centre Sun, Feb 19, 2012 Story by Narrative Science.
The Cumberland Grads tried to dig themselves out of a two-goal hole, but the Nepean Raiders held on for a 4-3 victory. Nepean took a 4-2 lead during the third period, only to have Cumberland storm back on a Marc Beckstead goal 19:30 into the third period to pull to one goal down. The Grads' power play was ineffective against the Raiders' penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded. Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 32 seconds into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts. The Nepean penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled eight minors and one major for 21 minutes in penalty time. The Raiders surpassed its season average of 12.0 penalty minutes per game. Nepean forced Cumberland goalie Robin Billingham to work between the pipes, taking 38 shots. The Raiders were helped by Kenneth Neil, who registered one goal and one assist. Neil scored on the power play 9:15 into the third period to make the score Nepean. Nepean had gotten the advantage when the Grads' Jonathon Elliott was sent off for holding stick. Craig Cowie picked up the assist. Nepean also got points from Ryan MacLean, who also had one goal and one assist. Mac Weegar also scored for Nepean. In addition, Nepean received assists from Dalen Hedges, Vincent Llorca, and Brent Norris, who contributed one a piece. Cumberland was not heavily penalized during the game, and finished with six minors and one major totalling 17 minutes. The Grads ended up below their season average of 26.0 penalty minutes per game. The Raiders were unable to stop Cumberland from sending pucks towards the net, and the Grads eventually piled up 35 shots on goal. Cumberland also got a goal from Keegan Harper as well. Other players who recorded assists for Cumberland were Philippe Drouin, who had two and Kale Wild, Sean Bamford, and Mark Golberg, who each chipped in one. Matt Zawadzki made 32 saves for Nepean on 35 shots. The Raiders registered two goals on four power play opportunities. For Nepean, Michael Vered was ejected from the game. Billingham rejected 34 shots on goal for Cumberland. The Grads ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Zach Rodier was ejected from the game.
