Stoney Creek uses shootout to best Welland, 4-3 (3-2 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Stoney Creek Warriors defeated the Welland Jr. Canadians in a shootout 4-3 (3-2 SO).

The shootout featured 12 attempts between both teams. Welland got shootout goals from Mike Riley and Mike Marquis. In addition to the clincher, Stoney Creek got shootout goals from Brad Kobryn and Mark Silvestri.

The Warriors came back from a two-goal deficit to capture the victory. Stoney Creek trailed 2-0 after a goal by the Jr. Canadians' Jeff Verreault at 15:47 in the second period. The Warriors knotted things up at 3-3 on a goal by Kobryn at 19:59 in the third period.

Kobryn had two goals to lead Stoney Creek to victory.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 10:58 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

The Warriors' penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled 16 minors and one major for 37 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 29.0 minutes per game Stoney Creek had been spending in the box. The Warriors excelled on the penalty kill, only allowing Welland to get one power play goal on 13 chances.

Stoney Creek also got a goal from David Ruberto as well. Other players who recorded assists for Stoney Creek were Jason Shaw, who had three and Tyler VanKleef, Mike Casale, and Marcus Ruberto, who each chipped in one.

The Jr. Canadians racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with 12 minors and one major for 39 minutes in penalty time. Welland surpassed its season average of 21.0 penalty minutes per game.

The Jr. Canadians were helped by Chris Rivest, who registered one goal. Rivest scored 2:20 into the third period to make the score 3-2 Welland. Braden Curry picked up the assist. Riley also scored for Welland. In addition, Welland received assists from Mike Crocock, John Bull, and Marquis, who contributed one each.

Marcus Del Conte rejected 26 shots on goal for Stoney Creek. The Warriors registered two goals on eight power play opportunities. For Stoney Creek, Brad Col and Luke Nogard were ejected from the contest. Matt Coulombe made 25 saves for Welland on 28 shots. The Jr. Canadians ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Jeremy Beresh was ejected from the game.
