Ottawa wins tough contest against Smiths Falls, 5-3

The Ottawa Senators gutted out a close 5-3 win against the Smiths Falls Bears.

No lead was more than two goals during the contest, and the winning goal was scored by Andrew Newell at 15:18 of the second period.

Newell was all over the ice for Ottawa, as he tallied two goals in the win.

Andrew Hampton also scored for Ottawa. More assists for Ottawa came via Rob Caparelli, who had three, Maxime Villeneuve-Menard and Alex Poitras, who each chipped in one, and Nicholas Belleville and Trevor Doucette, who contributed two a piece.

Smiths Falls was helped by Tom Coy, who had one goal. Coy scored on the power play 7:15 into the first period to make the score 1-1. The Bears had gained a power play chance when Chris Doyle was whistled for hooking. Mike McNamee picked up the assist. Smiths Falls also had goals scored by Peter Ryan and Brandon Dennis, who each put in one. Other players who recorded assists for Smiths Falls were Paul Hutchings, who had one.

Niels-Erik Ravn recorded 26 saves for the Senators. Ottawa incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. Trevor Wilson made 19 saves for Smiths Falls on 24 shots. The Bears incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
