Gems uses shootout to best Ironmen, 7-6

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as Gems defeated Ironmen in a shootout 7-6.

The shootout featured six attempts between both teams. Ironmen got a shootout goal from Phil Mahoney. Gems' other shootout goal was scored by Andrew Bier.

Gems saw a four-goal lead disappear, but was able to secure the win in a shootout. Gems made the score 6-2 on a goal by Jason Layton at 4:37 in the second period. Ironmen evened things up at 6-6 on a goal by Mike Berking at 13:53 in the third period.

Gems' offense rang up 48 shots on Ironmen's net.

Gems was helped by Jesse Trovato, who grabbed one goal. Trovato scored 10:10 into the first period to make the score 3-1 Gems. Gems also had goals scored by Frank Tadeo, Bier, and James Bello, who scored one goal each.

Gems was unable to stop Ironmen from sending pucks towards the net, and Ironmen eventually piled up 48 shots on goal. Ironmen gave up more goals than its normal season average. Ironmen averages 2.5 goals allowed per game.

Ironmen was helped by Greg Anderson, who racked up two goals. Anderson scored the first of his two goals at 4:43 into the third period to make the score 6-4 Gems. Anderson's next tally made the score 6-5 Gems with 7:30 left in the third period. Ironmen also got a goal from Raphael Hassine as well.

Stephen Olsen made 42 saves for Gems on 48 shots. Gems avoided the penalty box for the entire game and scored zero goals off of zero power plays. Doug Bonora rejected 41 shots on goal for Ironmen. Ironmen finished the contest with no penalties and went 0-for-0 with the man advantage.
