The Tornado coaching staff and scouts were very busy Tuesday afternoon drafting important pieces for the 2013-2014 roster. In all, 2 defenseman and 3 forwards were selected by the Tornado. With their first round selection, 17th overall, Coach Curtale selected 18 year old Defenseman Chris Leibinger from the Waterloo Black Hawks of the USHL. Leibinger is a veteran, left-handed, puck-moving defenseman from Saginaw, Michigan. He played 52 games in the USHL this past season, posting 4 goals and 13 assists.
With their second round pick, 41st overall, the Tornado selected another 18 year old defenseman, Joey Colatarci from the Florida Eels of the EJHL South. Colatarci brings a 6’2” frame with offensive potential posting 27 points in 26 games for the Eels last season. He’s a right-handed D-man from Fort Myers, Florida. With their third pick, 114th overall, Curtale went with a forward, 18 year old Bryan Basilico from the Green Bay Gamblers of the USHL. Basilico has good size (6’2”, 182 pounds) and brings 21 games of USHL experience to the Tornado roster. With the final two picks, the Tornado selected two more forwards; Russian Igor Vladykovskiy and Ryan Cusin, who both played U18 hockey for top programs in the United States last season.
