Florida Eels boast four more college commitments for 2013-14 playing season.
Eels’ Captain Steve Prince commits to Franklin Pierce, Eels assistant Captain Arnie Osuna commits to SUNY Canton while Eels top forward in league and team MVP Zach Mudge commits to Lake Forrest in Chicago. League Allstar Xavier Carrillo is off to Milwaukee School of Engineering to pursue his engineering degree.
Coach Jaymie Harrington is extremely excited about Steve Prince joining his squad. Coach Harrington said Prince is a big power forward who has tremendous skill with a winning appetite. With his size (6’ 2” 200 pounds) and strength he is very hard to play against. This season he had earned quite a bit of time while with the Eels on the power play and penalty kill. That experience will lend volumes to his contribution to Franklin Pierce. Prince also brings leadership qualities and possess strong character. The mixture of tangible and intangibles attributes is what caught th eye of coach Harrington of Franklin Pierce. Prince should fit right in with the chemistry of the team. They expect some immediate and positive dividends from Prince joining the the team.
Assistant Captain Arnie Osuna is thrilled to be heading to New York where he joins SUNY Canton. SUNY Canton coaching staff has been recruiting Osuna since his arrival to the Eels. Arnie is a small big man. He is 5’7” who plays like he is 6’. He is extremely fast great hands and can put the puck in the net. Indeed, before joining the Eels, Osuna played in the WSHL the previous year and notched 40 points. With the Eels he was also given the task of playing two way hockey and had the lions share of penalty kill as well the mission of shutting down opposing teams’ top scorers. His tenacity and grit earned him plenty of special team time on the power play and penalty kill as well. Osuna was a big fan favorite back in Fort Myers.
The Eels MVP Zach Mudge is off to Lake Forrest College in Illinois. Zach had probably more offers from more Division 3 schools out East and several in the midwest than any other player in the EJHL South. He came to us mid season from the NAHL and proved to be the Eels top player game in and game out. Mudge was selected several times Forward of the Month, League First Team All Star and to the League All Star team. Zach had several Division 1 colleges pursuing him before choosing Lake Forrest. The coaches and staff at Lake Forrest simply made it feel right. He also loves the opportunity to play closer to home. Lake Forrest is getting a very special player said GM Scarpaci. Zach is a phenomenal competitor. He has great hands, peripheral vision, and captivating explosive speed and excelleration. Zach throttles by opposing defenseman and burns goalies at will. Coach Bloomingburg said he has the insatiable appetite to score. He has the intangibles of being a winner in every game. He is hard on himself and pushes he teammates by example on and off the ice. No matter what showcase we were at GM Scarpaci and Coach Bloomingburg were inundated with college scouts wanting Mudge.
Xavier Carrillo was a solid defenseman for the Eels this season. He played Juniors the previous year in the west and he brought that experience to the Eels blue-line. His poise and consistence did not go unnoticed by the league as Carrillo was selected to the league’s All_star game. His efforts were also witnessed by several college coaches at the 5 college showcases the Eels’ attended. Xavier decide to foregoing several key Eastern NCAa college hockey teams and is off to the midwest to attend Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE)
We are all especially proud of the Prince Ousna, Mudge and Carrillo. These four boys are extremely hard workers and will carry the Eels blue collar work ethic to each of their schools and we know they will be successful not only on the ice but in th classroom as well. They are are phenomenal leaders and they will rise to the top and become important leaders in their respective college communities and as future American Citizens.
