A1 Solar Signings

NEWPORT, R.I. — Next up for Newport’s Solar Signings powered by A1 Roofing are pitchers, Seton Hall junior John Downing and Louisville freshman Jake Gregor.

Downing will hit the mound for the Gulls this summer, following his third season at Seton Hall.

The LHP from New Hyde Park, New York, has been a key factor in the Pirates’ rotation. In 21.1 innings, he’s registered 16 hits and eight runs, balanced out by 14 strikeouts.

Downing is 5-1 on the season with a 2.11 ERA as of late March, his best performance being a scoreless five innings against Iona on March 25 when he held the Gaels to five hits, four strikeouts and zero walks en route to his first Big East Weekly Honors.

Gregor — the No. 1 RHP out of Kentucky and 49th nationally via Perfect Game — enters his first season with No. 18 Louisville.

The rookie has thrown three innings and holds a 2.70 ERA for the Cardinals.

Come back next week for another pair of Gulls to join the flock with our Solar Signings, powered by A1 Roofing!

The Newport Gulls, members of the 13-team New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL), are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, founded as the Rhode Island Gulls in 1998 in Cranston, R.I., before moving to Newport in 2001. In addition to recruiting, fielding, and developing a team of the nation’s top collegiate baseball athletes and attracting 50,000 fans annually to Cardines Field, the predominantly volunteer organization strives to benefit the community via summer camps, reading programs, fundraisers, scholarships, and charitable donations – totaling over $1 million since 2001. The Gulls are eight-time champions of the NECBL – the winningest franchise in league history – and were ranked as the overall No. 1 summer collegiate baseball team in the country by Perfect Game USA in 2012.
