Ace on the Mound

By Beka Haddad

On June 28, 2024, the Boca Raton Lions hosted the Coconut Creek Diamond Ducks for the first game of the morning under the hot Florida sunshine. Though the game did not have a high score, it showcased some fantastic pitching.

For starters, in the game of baseball, it is uncommon to have the starting pitcher on the mound for more than half the game. Usually, after the first four or five innings in a nine-inning game, relief pitchers will take to the mound. However, during today’s game, the Lions’ Allan Jorge toed the rubber for 6.1 innings. The 6’0 left-handed pitcher struck out 10 Diamond Ducks, allowing only four walks and one hit over the course of his time on the mound. Jorge’s spectacular performance kept the Diamond Ducks from scoring, while giving his teammates Johnny Bruno and Dylan Wimbs the opportunity to extend the Lions’ lead to 2-0. Even though the Diamond Ducks did end up scoring after Jorge left the mound, his pitching put the Lions in the driver’s seat for the remainder of the game and ultimately the win.

When Jorge walked off the field after the top of the seventh inning, he was greeted by the praise of everyone in attendance. Jorge just finished his sophomore season at Lynn University, which is located locally here in Boca Raton, Florida. His excellent pitching has been beneficial for the Lions so far this season, putting them in the middle of the rankings in their second season in the SFCBL. It will be exciting to see where Jorge and the Lions will go from here during the remainder of the season.
