Ricky Wolfer and his squad opened the long-awaited SFCBL season opener with a spark. After allowing a first inning run by Elijah Magyar and the West Palm Beach Iguanas, the X-Team never looked back.
Ryan Devanney toed the rubber for the Iguanas and twirled multiple scoreless innings before getting bit by Coconut Creek who took advantage of a wild pitch and an error. The Palm Beach Atlantic hurler finished his outing after 4.2 innings, allowing just two hits and three runs. The 6’3 junior walked two while punching out six.
Capitalizing on errors was the story of the ballgame. West Palm Beach closed the opener with a stunning seven errors in the field. X-Team scored in bunches, as they tallied two runs in each of the 5th, 6th, and 8th innings, respectively. Jack Goldberg highlighted Coconut Creek with a 2-4 day at the dish and exceptional base running. In the 5th, Goldberg showed off the speed by snagging second and third base before Brian Parkinson drove him in with a single.
Goldberg, the Coker College outfielder, paired up with fellow freshman Jimmy Estarita to provide insurance in the 8th for the X-Team pitching staff.
Chris Fagot tossed three scoreless after allowing a run to open the contest, and University of Tampa pitcher Frankie Billisi followed up with two shutout frames. Chaos ensued yet after as Joey Lopez entered out of relief and soon left the ballgame. The young right-hander plunked an Iguanas batter in the helmet on a pitch deemed high velocity, sending him out before his second batter.
Utilityman Luke Peterson saved the day, finishing the matchup with three innings allowing just one run. The lone run scored on a sacrifice groundout from Dakota Barbet.
The X-Team started its SFCBL debut on the right note and hopes to steer its way to two more victories tomorrow. Coconut Creek and the Boca Raton Blazers play the only two games on the South Florida Collegiate Baseball League schedule on June 2nd, a “media day” for the advanced league.
