Newport RI: 2013 Newport Gull Tyler Ferguson is the 33rd Gulls alumni to make his Major League Baseball debut. Gulls in the pros is brought to you by Planet Fitness. Ferguson was originally drafted in the 40th round by the San Francisco Giants in the 2012 draft, but did not sign with the team. He went and played at Vanderbilt, where after a successful collegiate career he was drafted 168th overall in the 6th round by the Texas Rangers in the 2015 MLB Draft. He played eight years of minor league baseball before making his Major League Debut this season.

The 2013 Gull came to Newport after his freshman season at Vanderbilt. Ferguson started four games as a freshman and appeared in eight. The right hander went 3-1 with a 4.21 ERA. He earned his first career win against Evansville going five strong and not allowing a run.

Ferguson joined the Gulls that summer, and picked up right where he left off at Vandy. He made his way to Newport in late June, after a NCAA Super Regional loss to #8 Louisville. Starting five games and making seven appearances for Newport, it was evident Ferguson was going to be a force whether he start or come out of the pen.

The debut came on June 23rd against in-state rival Ocean State on the road. Striking out two over 2.0 innings over work his transition from college to summer ball was seamless. He went on to go 3-1 in the regular season with an impressive 3.03 ERA.  Striking out 29 batters in 29.2 innings pitched Ferguson showed all summer long how dangerous his arsenal was.

Overall while at Vanderbilt, Ferguson made 18 starts and compiled a record of 10-5 in his two seasons. Racking up 97.1 innings pitched and 83 strikeouts he was a reliable arm for the Commodores. Only allowing 35 earned runs and 41 walks in his two seasons there it was no surprise the Rangers went after Ferguson.

After being drafted by Texas, he signed as a free agent with Atlanta in 2021. In 2022, he was picked up by Arizona and pitched one season in the minors before signing on with the Dodgers. Staying in California, He was signed by Oakland in November of 2023, and made his MLB debut for them May 7th 2024. In his debut, Ferguson went two innings and struck out three not allowing a run. He has pitched 4.1 innings in the show and has yet to allow a run.

The righty from Fresno, California is the 2nd Gull to make his MLB debut in 2024. Newport is extremely proud of Ferguson’s achievement to this point in time and wishes him continued success in his Major League career .Once again, Gulls in the Pros is brought to you by Planet Fitness.
