Oliver, Co-Pitchers of the Week Electrify in Week 7

Date:  Source: Ocean State Waves

With the anticipation of the summer seasons rapidly escalating, the boys of the Ocean State are finding their pace and their place within their respective lineups. As most teams prepare for the second half of the season with conference play looming on the horizon, three Waves have really shown up throughout the midseason mania. The competition has thoroughly stepped up, forcing us to name co-pitchers of the week for week seven accolades. This week we are honoring returning Wave, Dawson Logie and a new addition to the Waves roster in Jason Blood, earning Whalers Brewery Co-Pitchers of the Week honors. And on the other side of play, freshman second baseman Jasen Oliver absolutely dominated the leaderboard this week for the University of Indiana, earning Rienzi Pasta Player of the Week honors.

Junior righty out of Merrimack College, Dawson Logie, earns Whalers Brewery Pitcher of the Week honors for just the first time in his Waves career after a dominant weekend on the mound. The Medfield, Connecticut native has played a crucial relief role both with the Waves and at Merrimack, coming in clutch in a home matchup against Bryant, and again on the road against Wagner, tallying back-to-back no hitters. In their midweek matchup against Bryant University, Logie tallied two strikeouts in just one inning pitched. This performance was followed by a big relief performance against Wagner, where Logie tallied a season high of innings pitched (2.1) and a career total of strikeouts in an outing (6). Logie finished the weekend with 3.1 innings pitched and a total of eight strikeouts, keeping Bryant and Wagner off the leaderboard and the bases. This big weekend outing helped lead Merrimack to a series win over Wagner college in an NEC showdown.

Earning Whalers Brewery Pitcher of the Week honors for the second time this season, junior Jason Blood had another assertive week on the mound. The Buena Park, California native made two appearances on the week, one against San Diego and another against Cal Poly. In a combined 5.1 innings on the week, Blood tallied eight strikeouts and only two earned runs. In his outing against Cal Poly, he earned the most strikeouts in any three-inning stretch on the year, with a total of five. Blood n0w totals 28 strikeouts in 22.1 innings pitched on the season.

On the other side of the ball, freshman Jasen Oliver of the University of Indiana had a career week, earning himself Rienzi Pasta Player of the Week honors. The Hoosiers started their three-win week in a Tuesday afternoon matchup with Middle Tennessee State University, where Oliver broke through and set the pace for the rest of the weekend. Launching his first career home run off of the Blue Raiders wasn’t enough, as his next at-bat he tallied his second. The Hoosiers welcomed the Butler University Bulldogs on the weekend, splitting the weekend series 2-2. On a heater, Oliver also tallied his first career triple, and a season high of four runs batted in. The Almont, Michigan native ended the week batting an electrifying .550, going 11-for-20 at the plate, scoring seven runs and batting in seven more, atop of his three home runs and three walks. This outstanding performance earned Oliver Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors, making him the eighth Hoosier to earn Big Ten Freshman honors since Jeff Mercer took over at Indiana in 2019, and is the sixth player on this years roster to have earned it at least once.
