GMU Sweeps The 3 Game Weekend At Home!

GMU Ice Hockey had three games at home between Thursday and Saturday and finished the series with three wins.

 

The Patriots faced off against WMU twice this past week. Thursday's game resulted in a 4-2 win for GMU. In the first period, freshman Jeremy Isaacs scored his first career goal with a wrist shot from the faceoff circle (Tsakounis, Ignatov). WMU scored two goals in the first few minutes of the second period, gaining a 2-1 lead. With 15:35 remaining in the second, Kael Dillon shot from top of the faceoff circle, scoring GMU’s second goal, tying the score (Tsakounis, Sharp). In the third period, Matt Price scores off the rebound, besting WMU’s goaltender. (Miranda, Petite). Ray Booth fought for control of the puck against the boards and sent a backhanded pass to defenseman James Sharp. Sharp passed the puck across the blue line to Drew Tsakounis who took a sharp angle shot and scored our fourth goal. Goaltender Tanner Rusnak saw a total of 35 shots on goal, saving 33 of them.  

 

Friday’s game against WMU resulted in a 3-2 win for GMU. In the first period, the puck loose in the slot, is tipped in by Matt Price, getting an early lead (Petite, Willey). In the second period, Joe Petite takes a wrist shot from high slot, making it passed WMU’s netminder. With 6 minutes left in the period, Patrick Chapman carries the puck across the blue line and takes a wrist shot that bests WMU’s goaltender once again. The third period sees two goals from WMU, but they are unable to come back any further. The Patriots are able to hold them off defensively for the rest of the game. Goaltender Johnathan Verity saw a total of 30 shots on goal, saving 28 of them.  

 

On Saturday, the Patriots matched up with SDSU, coming out on top for a third time this weekend with a final score of 2-1. In the first period, Mike Miranda dekes out the goaltender and backhands the puck in the net (Price, Petite). With 11:16 left in the second period Mike Miranda scores a second goal on a powerplay assisted by Joe Petite. A few minutes later SDSU scores a power play goal bringing the score to 2-1. The third period GMU is awarded a penalty shot, which was shot by Mike Miranda but SDSU’s goaltender is able to stop the puck. Starting goaltender Lukas Heuberger saw a total of 31 shots and stopped 30.
