Mason Hockey Needs to Stay HOT!

Date:  Source: George Mason University Ice Hockey

Last Friday, Mason Hockey didn’t get off to the start it had hoped for in the New Year, losing 4-1 to West Chester. While Mason played evenly with West Chester when both teams were even-strength; special teams got the best of the Patriots with the Rams of West Chester scoring 3 goals on special teams.

Mason got back on track with a huge 6-1 win over Towson on Sunday. Stephen Thomas opened the scoring with two first period goals, his first goals as a Patriot! The team continued their relentless pressure and held a two-goal lead going into the third period, up 3-1. The third period was another strong period for Mason as they added three more goals to their total, leading them to the 6-1 victory.

With the playoff window closing, and their hopes to qualify for ECHA postseason play still intact, Mason has two crucial home matchups this weekend. The Patriots will play Lehigh on Friday night, and Duquesne in a matiness game on Saturday.

Mason looks to avenger their loss in the 2021-22 season opener at Lehigh in the fall of 2021.  Mason has yet to play Duquesne this season but has had success against the Dukes in previous matchups, winning both games in Pittsburgh in 2020. This will be the only meeting between Mason and Duquesne this regular season.

Having won three of their last four games and seeing themselves play “Mason Hockey” -- a combination of sound forechecking and physical play, this is the best the team has played all year. The key to the weekend’s games will be special teams, once again. Mason plays a strong 5v5 game but plan to improve their performance with the man advantage during the power-play. As things continue to trend upwards for the team, they are working to finish strong to earn a postseason playoff berth for the 12th consecutive season. As always, come out and show your support for the green and gold and help the team finish strong!
