Mason Hockey continues its Division 1 season, traveling on the road for October. After playing the first 6 ACHA games of this season away, GMU hockey is excited to play 2 games on their home turf this month. Mason Hockey traveled to Morgantown, West Virginia this past weekend (October 1st and 2nd) to play against West Virginia University. While both teams gave a strong showing, Mason Hockey returned from the trip without a win. Even still, the team had many memorable moments on the ice from players. In both games, Mason started the first lead the first period, demonstrating their ability to compete. However, West Virginia University came back in both games, due to a combination of a deeper bench and outstanding goaltending relief from Jacob Hough of WVU (who has started doing stalwart work in goal for the Mountaineers). The overall scores for the games were WVU (7) - GMU (4) on Friday and WVU (6) - GMU (5) during overtime, for the final score on Saturday.
Despite the loss for George Mason, there were many highlights from players during both games. Senior Cameron Smith scored a total of 5 goals this weekend (2 on Friday and 3 on Saturday), raising his season total to 8 goals in three games played. On Friday, Freshman Will MaGrath scored his first goal in a Mason Uniform, as did Junior Noah Ehlers, in his 2nd game in a Mason Uniform. Freshman Tanner Rusnak got his first start battling in the net, helping George Mason get into overtime with West Virginia University during the second game on Saturday.
The team continues its ACHA season on the road again this weekend (October 8th, 9th, and 10th) traveling up to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. There, they will be playing against Robert Morris University (Friday and Saturday), and Duquesne University (Sunday). After this upcoming road trip, George Mason Hockey gets to play on their home turf, hosting their 2021-2022 ECHA home opener on Friday, October 15th at the Prince William Ice Center, against William Patterson. Puck drops at 8:20 pm and GMU hockey hopes to see you there!
