Mason Ice Hockey kicked off its’ 2021-2022 season Saturday, September 25, with its first ECHA match-up against Lehigh University in Allentown PA. The team entered the game with limited practice as a result of several positive COVID tests the prior week, which kept players off the ice as a precaution until September 20th. Despite these challenges, Mason Ice Hockey players played an intense game against Lehigh University.

GMU played a strong first period but ran into some penalty trouble resulting in Lehigh jumping to a 4-0 lead in the beginning. Despite this setback, Mason Hockey worked hard and climbed their way back into the game, closing the gap to be a 5-3 score after the second period. GMU continued their turnaround, scoring another goal in the third period. With the game scored at 5-4, Lehigh responded with a goal of their own, scoring the game at 6-4 at this time. Determined to make a comeback, the Mason Hockey team appeared to score again during this period, but unfortunately was called by the official and the goal was disqualified. Lehigh tacked on one more goal to result in the final 7-4 score.

Forward Cameron Smith helped lead the team by scoring three goals for George Mason, followed by Matthew Price, who scored his first goal in a Mason Uniform to total four tallies in the game.
