Behind 2 goals from junior defenseman Cam Toussaint and a 29-save shutout from senior goaltender John McCarthy, the Pirates glided to an 8-0 win over Monmouth University at the Jersey Shore Arena on Saturday night.

From the first puck drop, the Pirates forechecked hard and shot the puck often, notching 20 shots on goal in the first period alone. A powerful wrist shot by Toussaint found the top right corner halfway through the period, giving the Pirates their first goal of the season and putting them up 1-0. Six minutes later, freshman standout Mike Mascolo followed up his own rebound and put the Pirates up by 2. McCarthy turned aside 9 shots to keep Monmouth off the board.

The second period was more of the same, with Toussaint scoring his second of the game and junior forward Nick Serapiglia finding the back of the net. The Pirates never gave Monmouth's goalie a chance to catch his breath, adding 16 more shots on goal, making the total SOG 36 through just two periods of play.

The Pirates kept their foot on the gas pedal, scoring four more times behind goals from freshmen Brendon O'Rourke and Mike Volpi, junior JP Winkle, and senior Thomas Healy. However, throughout the third period, Monmouth showed that they would not wave the white flag, peppering McCarthy with 15 shots and finding a number of high quality scoring chances. It was McCarthy, though, that prevailed, stopping all 15 in the third and making a series of unbelievable saves. McCarthy's 29 saves earned him his first career shutout and guided Seton Hall to their first win of the season.

The Pirates looked to continue their winning ways at Princeton on Sunday night. However, no referees were present at the game, so the game could not be played. Both teams agreed to play a 5-on-5 scrimmage, with Seton Hall earning a 4-2 victory. Goaltenders Adam Spitz and Joey Yutsus played strong and combined for the win. The Pirates will face Princeton again at the Hobey Baker Memorial Ice Rink on Friday night, where they will look to improve to 2-0 in league play before a big home opener against West Chester on Saturday.
