Historic Season for the Cougars

Date:  Source: ACHA: Brigham Young University Hockey

Due to the pandemic, the only teams allowed to play in the Western Division this fall were BYU and four teams in North Dakota. Plans for a road trip to North Dakota in the fall semester fell apart in November when the Utah Governor issued restrictions on sports teams to travel and play. The only games BYU was able to pick up in the fall were two exhibition games against the Park City Pioneers (a men's senior A team).

As winter semester started up, the landscape for ACHA hockey in the west didn't change very much. Utah State University was able to begin playing, but with no other teams starting their seasons and those that did not willing to travel to Utah to play BYU at home, the costs were too high for the Cougars to play all games out of State.

The team had already scheduled a four game series with in State rivals Utah State Aggies, and in spite of the inability to put a full schedule together they would honor the commitment to play those games.

The series started on the Aggies home ice in Logan, a notoriously difficult venue for visiting teams to win games, let alone back to back games.

On Friday January 15th, BYU took the early lead with a goal from veteran goal scorer Aleks Stroud, but the Cougars wouldn't keep the lead for long when four minutes later the Aggies would put one past the goal line.

The second period started quickly for BYU with a goal two minutes into the period from rookie Conner Allen (his first collegiate goal), followed 6 minutes later with a goal from another veteran Alex Barrus.  Utah State brought it back to within one goal, but before the end of the period, another rookie with his first collegiate goal, Jacobi Clark, put another past the Aggies goal tender to make the score 4 - 2 going into the third period.

The third period the Aggies, as expected, came out with intensity, not wanting to lose in front of their fans.  They were able to score twice in the period, but couldn't prevent a third rookie from scoring his first collegiate goal as Jackson Bagshaw was able to find the back of the net and score the game winner, wrapping up the game 5-4 for the Cougs.

Saturday was no less exciting. Goals were harder to find in the second game, but veteran players came through with two goals from Aleks Stroud and one goal from Alex Barrus (a little birthday gift from his brother Cody who got the assist), BYU was able to hold off Utah State and finish with another one point win at Eccles Ice Arena. Final score 3-2.

The series came to Provo in February, and the Friday night game started off much like the Friday game in Logan with the teams exchanging single goals in the first period. BYU's goal was scored by Kris Heck from the point to get the Cougars back on even footing with the Aggies after they got the early lead. After that, it was all BYU hockey with goals coming in the second period from Teagan Pitcher, Jacobi Clark, Jackson Bagshaw, and Alex Barrus. The third period saw BYU playing short handed for three penalties, but the penalty kill was stellar and the period ended with the Cougs taking the win in a 5-1 finish in front of a noisy, cheering, supportive, and very happy home crowd.

Saturday was senior night for the Cougars with three great players leaving the team. Aleks Stroud, Alex Barrus, and starting goalie, Jeremy Manzella. The night saw the stands fill up again, and after honoring the seniors, the fans would be treated to a much higher scoring contest.

The first period was a BYU showcase on how to bury the puck in the net. The Aggies started off with the first goal, but that only seemed to ignite the Cougar bench as veteran Chase Christensen put two in and two more came from rookies Nathan Morrow (his first collegiate goal), and Cody Barrus whose brother returned the favor from the game in Logan and provided him the assist to end the first period up 4-1. In the second period the Aggies got a goal to bring the score within two, and in the third they brought it to within one with a goal about four minutes into the period. BYU players Alex Osborne and Jacobi Clark put two into the Utah State net to extend the lead again, but the Aggies were able to bring it within two with another goal. In the final seconds of the game Utah State pulled their goal tender, and with the clock about to expire, departing senior and beloved veteran Aleks Stroud slid in an empty netter to hand the Aggies a three goal deficit loss of 7-4.

This was a historic series for the Cougars ending their season with four straight wins, and going undefeated against perennial powerhouse Utah State.
