Toronto Jr. Canadiens’ recruit Matthew Jovanovic has confirmed his commitment to join the NCAA Division 1 University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish in South Bend, Indiana beginning with the 2022-23 season.
“The Toronto Jr. A Canadiens are truly excited to have the Matthew Jovanovic and family on board with our organization and look forward to watching his development in the OJHL,” said general manager Blake Ricci. “Notre Dame is one of the most prestigious programs in the NCAA and they have obtained a commitment from one of the top defencemen in his age group.”
Jovanovic was a second-round (31st overall) selection by the Saginaw Spirit in this year’s Ontario Hockey League draft following a nine-point point season with Toronto Marlboros U16 team.
The 15-year-old – he turns 16 Sept. 22 – played seven seasons with the Marlies in the GTHL. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound mobile defenceman was one of seven Ontario players on the Canadian team that won bronze at the Youth Olympic Games in Lausanne, Switzerland in January.
“I am very excited to be joining the Toronto Jr. A Canadiens organization and the Ontario Junior Hockey League. I am looking forward to a great 2020-2021 season,” Jovanovic said. “The OJHL is one of the best junior leagues in Canada and you have to be prepared to ‘bring it’ every night.”
“I am joining a great team and winning culture; I can’t wait to get started.”
On the NCAA.
“I am thrilled about my commitment to the University of Notre Dame,” he said. “Its strong academic and rich sports tradition were big factors in my decision and I believe will help me to achieve all my goals, both as a student and as an athlete.”
Congratulations to Matthew and best of luck in the OJHL and NCAA!
The OJHL, the largest Jr. A hockey league in Canada, has had more than 120 NCAA, U Sports, CHL and professional commitments in 2019-20 – including more than 45 NCAA Division I scholarships.
