On June 3, 2017, Purcellville's Trevin Esquerra went 4-5 against Winchester, with a run, three RBIs, and a double. (The Cannons won the game, 17-8. Nice that the Royals went for two after that touchdown...) Esquerra went on to hit a total of .362/.407/.632 in 152 at-bats that summer, with 11 doubles, three triples, eight home runs, 33 RBIs, and a 11/46 BB/K ratio. Esquerra was one of the unfortunate many who lost most of their senior season. He hit .286/.423/.492 in 63 at-bats, with 16 runs scored, four doubles, three home runs, and 11 RBIs.
On June 3, 2016, Front Royal's Erne Valdes threw 6 2/3 shutout innings against Staunton, allowing three hits, one walk, and striking out 10. Over six starts that summer, Valdes went 2-1, 1.04, with a 0.836 WHIP, 3.4 BB/9, and 11.7 K/9 in 34 2/3 innings pitched. ATVL named him the top starter in the league. After his senior season at St. Thomas in 2018, in which he struck out 61 batters in 30 2/4 innings, the Texas Rangers signed him as an undrafted free agent. He went to the Arizona League and kept striking batters out; he finished with 42 K's in 28 innings... and got released.
