Happy 4th. It's All Star Week In the Virginia Shenan...
Date: Jul 4, 2020
Welcome Valley Baseball fans to Opening Day 20/20 and another great year of excellent local VBL action as we throw out our first pitch in the 20/20 season (Since hindsight is 20/20 we’ve dubbed this the 20/20 season. It sounds better than 2019 rewound). What better way to begin Opening Day 20/20 then by revisiting Opening Day 2019 montage style.
Opening Day 20/20 begins in Purcellville as the Cannons host the Woodstock River Bandits, a team that really struggled in 2018. The ’18 River Bandits (5-37) sported a win percentage of .119 that even had the 2018 Baltimore Orioles blushing (.290). However, the 2019 River Bandits’ impressive first inning of the new year got the team off to the right start against a newly assembled Purcellville team looking to back up its growing momentum of its 2018 season.
Next, our focus shifts to the eventual 2019 Champion Charlottesville Tom Sox who began their season against Southern rival Harrisonburg in Eagle Field. The fifth inning is where we’ll join in on the game, as five combined runs from both teams would come in to score. (Remember what a scoring run looks like? Join and and allow us to refresh your memory.)
If offense is what you want, then the Opening Day matchup between the Front Royal Cardinals and the Staunton Braves will satisfy your itch, as 20 runs came into score on the evening. The sixth inning in Staunton features five of those 20 total runs, but one team’s pitching leads to a pair of unearned runs that may have been the decisive blow in the game.
Finally, Opening Day 2020 concludes in the tenth inning between the Strasburg Express and the defending 2018 VBL Champion New Market Rebels. Extra innings were needed as the Rebels fought to defend their crown at home against a Strasburg team looking to play spoiler. Despite the great play from both teams, in the end, the game finishes in devastating fashion for one of the squads.
Can you name the Hitter of the Day or the Pitcher of the Day without looking at either the website, your notes or John Leonard’s 2019 Annual? If you can please email us at VBLeague@isomermedia.com and we’ll send you some team swag as a reward.
