HAGERSVILLE (Feb. 18) -- The Glanbrook Rangers scored a key road victory as they opened their Bloomfield Division round two playoff series with a solid 3-1 triumph over the Hagersville Hawks.
It was the Rangers first win since Dec. 4 against the Hawks, who they duelled for top spot in the Bloomfield Division into the season's final stages before settling for third place. The Hawks, meanwhile, lost for the first time in the post-season after a first round sweep of the Port Dover Sailors.
Noah Bollert (pictured), who has been on fire with eight goals in his last four playoff games, opened the scoring for the Rangers four minutes into the second period. The Rangers, who came out like gangbusters in this contest, firing 17 shots at Hagersville goaltender Avery Hartwick in the scoreless first period, increased their lead to 2-0 just four minutes later as Cooper Hood notched his fifth post-season goal.
Peter Cappucci cut that margin in half with a power-play marker at the midway mark of the second frame, and seized some momentum in the third period as they struggled for the equalizer. But Rangers' goalie Matt Lukic held firm, making 30 saves on the night, and Joel Wallace ensured victory for Glanbrook with his first goal of the playoffs at 15:02 of the third.
NOTES: Noah Matteson contributed two assists for the Rangers ... Glanbrook's penalty-killing unit stopped Hagersville on four of their five power-play opportunities. The Rangers' power-play, meanwhile, went 0-for-3. ... Defencemen Dallas Nadasdi and forwards David Cherubin and Harrison Farrugia were out of the Rangers' linuep.
