Weekend Preview 1/30-2/2/20: Last Chance for Push on Final Regular Season Weekend

Date:  Source: Western Collegiate Club Hockey Association

Only one weekend stands between the regular season and the 2020 WCCHA Tournament, but there is still plenty to play for. Four division series - two in each division - will complete the league schedule, while a pair of teams will welcome a first-time visitor from the great state of Colorado for non-conference action.

CURRENT DIVISION STANDINGS | LATEST KRACH RANKINGS

NORTHWEST DIVISION

NORTH DAKOTA STATE @ NORTH DAKOTA (FRI/SAT): A in-state rivalry matchup is set to go down in Grand Forks as the University of North Dakota host North Dakota State University in the final set of regular season games for both teams. The home team sits precariously in the 8th position in the league KRACH with St. John's just behind, so a result or two would do nicely to calm the nerves ahead of the final KRACH release on Sunday. In fact, if UND can take 3 of 4 points, they'd leapfrog NDSU and automatically qualify for the tournament - a feather in the cap for an always competitive team. Consistency, though, has kept this team from reaching the upper echelon so far this season, but with a berth in the tournament, anything can happen. The Fighting Hawks should be prepared to hold home ice and send a warning shot ahead of a potential trip to Blaine.

For the Bison, the weekend could cap an incredibly strong league season - much needed after some drastic inconsistency out of conference. Last weekend, the Bison pummelled UW-La Crosse before narrowly dropping a decision to Minnesota. It is clear this team is motivated, and with a tournament victory likely their only path to Regionals, the veteran core will push the entire roster to restart a winning streak that could carry through next Sunday.

MINNESOTA @ ST. JOHN'S (FRI/SAT): The Gophers and Johnnies will meet for the first time ever in WCCHA play this weekend when the U heads west to Sartell for a two game set. The Johnnies have adjusted well to life in the WCCHA, but some difficult results currently have the team on the outside looking in. After splitting a series with Winona State last weekend, the hosts will have to put together two perfect performances over one of the hottest teams in the league to earn the max points and have a chance to move up in the KRACH. A tall order, sure, but SJU has the talent to make waves on the final weekend of the regular season and will be motivated to finish strong.

The Gophers have once again put together a fine season and will want to cap their regular season with a pair of wins and claim the division title before heading to Blaine. Despite an eye-popping record, though, Minnesota is still in squeeky bum territory in terms of the Regional rankings, so they will want to avoid any slip up as they look for a deep push into the tourney next weekend to secure their position. For that reason, the focus will be on the here and now and gaining all four available points on Friday and Saturday.

SOUTHEAST DIVISION

MINNESOTA STATE @ UW-EAU CALIRE (FRI/SAT): One final showdown awaits in the division between the Mavericks and Blugolds as the final KRACH Rankings loom. UW-Eau Claire's mid-first semester revival has perhaps been the greatest storyline of the season, and last weekend they picked up where they left off with a sweep of St. Cloud State to run the winning streak to 15 straight. Another strong weekend would give UWEC - currently holding the first wildcard - a chance to take the streak into the WCCHA Tournament where they'll likely need a third championship to qualify for Regionals. If they keep up their strong play, however, it'll be hard to bet against them as a "dark horse."

Of course, the Mavericks won't be looking just to spoil UWEC's run but also to make one last push for the tournament. It's been an up and down year for the Mavericks, but the talent on the bench gives them a shot each and every game. They face a tall task on the road, but if ever there was a time to put it all together, now is it with the season and a chance to play for the Carla Berg Cup squarely on the line.

UW-LA CROSSE @ WINONA STATE (FRI/SAT): In La Crescent, the Warriors will welcome their rivals from just across the river for a two game set to close out the WCCHA season. Winona State's return to conference action this year has been replete with near misses, but their final home series is a great chance to finish strong and set the table for next year. The streaky offense will look to catch fire as the team goes for a series sweep.

For the Eagles, the final series of the year gives them one last shot at getting some division points. It's been a tough season, but the team has admirably soldiered on in hopes of catching lightning in a bottle and nabbing a conference victory. To do so, they'll lean on Jadon Motquin for leadership and scoring and hope for a strong showing from the rest of the roster as they play near home to close out the schedule.

In now cancelled non-conference action, the University of Denver was scheduled to play Gustavus Adolphus Thursday and St. Thomas on Friday/Saturday.

Idle this weekend are Minnesota-Duluth, Bethel, St. Cloud State, and Wisconsin. Wisconsin has already qualified for the 2020 WCCHA Tournament, while Minnesota-Duluth - currently 6th - will wait and see if they hold their spot. Barring unforeseen events, Bethel and St. Cloud State have concluded their regular season.
