Last weekend in The Colonial saw the final undefeated team fall in conference play. The College of New Jersey had a chance last Saturday to make-ground against the University of Pennsylvania but instead the Lions were awarded their first loss of the year against the Quakers who remain in second place. Elsewhere, NJIT put up a fight against the University of Scranton and Monmouth lit the red lamp 11 times.
In the third ACHA Southeast Rankings released on Wednesday, the University of Pennsylvania is inching closer to the Top 10 after it’s impressive win last weekend. The ranked teams are:
UPenn - 11th
Rutgers - 23rd
Scranton - 24th
Millersville - 27th
Seton Hall - 28th
NJIT - 29th
*Note: TCNJ, West Chester, Princeton, and Monmouth will be officially ranked in the coming weeks.
Now, here’s the full weekend recap:
Friday, November 14
Scranton Royals vs NJIT Highlanders (3-2)
The University of Scranton and New Jersey Institute of Technology may be on different ends of the CSCHC standings, but the Highlanders pushed the Royals for 60 minutes in Newark on Friday night. The only game that evening saw Scranton lose the lead two times before Peter Cassidy scored the game winner halfway through the third period.
The Highlanders have yet to record a victory over Scranton in CSCHC era as they are 0-7-1 against them since 2016-2017 season.
NJIT goalie Matthew Altomare played an extraordinary game saving 40 of the 43 shots the Royals put against him. He only allowed one goal in each of the three periods. John Foster scored with a little under eight minutes to go in the first period while Ryan Fitzmaurice found John Forlenza Ii midway through the second period to give the visitors a second lead.
The Highlanders fought hard and tied the game on two separate occasions. As both teams were playing 4v4, Dalton Smith scored NJIT’s first off assists from James Lyle and Michael Caufield. The offense returned for the home team in the third period when Matthew Sendecki tied the game a 2 each early on.
Despite the loss, coach Robert McMorrow praised his team’s effort especially in-goal. So far this season, Altomare has been challenged by Scranton over one hundred times and has made 106 saves on 113 shots.
