New York, NY – The Violets kicked off their 2019-2020 hockey season with a win against William Paterson University Friday evening followed up by a close overtime loss Saturday at WPU.

Just 10 minutes into the first game, the Violets led 2-0 with goals from sophomore Adam Peck and freshman Reagan Wortz. James Long, Aidan Wright, Frank Horowitz, and Giancarlo Pochintesta picked up the assists. The high energy persisted through the first period and into the second when junior Andrew Williamson scored a short-handed goal with the help from Richie Doherty and Aidan Wright. Freshman, David Rosales, closed out the second period with his first goal as a Violet bringing the score to 4-2. With the third period underway, senior Frank Horowitz was quick to capitalize with a wraparound goal on the power play. NYU takes the first game of the season by the final score of 5-2. Senior Patrick Cavanaugh made 27 saves in the win.

On Saturday afternoon the Violets traveled to Wayne, NJ to close out the home and home series. With a tough few penalties during the first period, WPU took a 1-0 lead over NYU. During the second period WPU led 3-0 with two more power play goals. With the second period nearing an end, Reagan Wortz scored his second goal in as many games with the assist going to senior Brandon Ritchey. Frank Horowitz then would go on to score two more goals to tie the game at three. Despite outshooting WPU 50-25, the Pioneers would score the game-winning goal in overtime.

"It felt great to finally play a game in an NYU Jersey," Wortz said, "we would've preferred to come away with two wins, but I feel confident in the potential I saw in this team."

The Violets look to bounce back and kick off league play this weekend when they host Syracuse University on October 11 & 12 at Chelsea Piers Sky Rink. Puck
drops at 9pm.
