Danbury, CT- An absolute heartbreaker for the Waves occurred Wednesday night, as they dropped their 2019 Opening Day contest to the Danbury Westerners in walk-off fashion 6-5. The game was capped off with a game-winning, three run homerun by Matt Zaffano (New Canaan, CT/ Hamilton) with one out in the ninth.

The Waves got off to a fantastic start in the first, when lefty Dillon Morton (Tampa, FL/ Winthrop) delivered the first home run of the 2019 NECBL season, a grand slam to left center field, giving Ocean State an early 4-0 lead.

Liam Dvorak (Bayport, NY/ Holy Cross) pitched well in his season debut, going four innings, allowing only one run on three hits while striking out five. The Waves went inning by inning after that. In the bottom of the sixth, Nicholas Lorusso (Monroe, CT/ Villanova) got Danbury back to within one with a two run homer.

Ocean State grabbed an insurance run in the top of the ninth, which set the stage for the dramatic walk off. Following a walk and a bloop single, Zaffano took a hanging breaking ball deep to right center field for the game winner. The loss went to Corey Sawyer (Kearny, NJ/ Seton Hall), who lasted 1/3 of an inning, giving up two hits and three runs. The win was picked up by Brian Rodriguez (Yonkers, NY/ Northeastern), his first of the season.

Ocean State falls to 0-1 on the young season, with Danbury moving to 1-0. Ocean State’s next game is scheduled for Thursday, the home opener vs. the New Bedford Bay Sox. Game time is scheduled for 6:30, and can be heard online on the NECBL Broadcast network.
