Friday January 18, 2019: Long Beach State (LBSU) 3 VS Weber State University (WSU) 6

Long Beach State arrived in Colorado eager to show the local teams that they can compete with any team in the region. The trip started with a matchup against 14th ranked Weber State.  It was LBSU jumping out to an early 2-0 lead on goals by Francis Lemay and Luke Miller. Weber State would respond however, late in the first period with a goal of their own. The teams went back and forth in the 2nd period, each with quality scoring chances. Until WSU tied the game late in the middle frame. Long Beach did not help themselves in the 3rd and final period, as they accumulated 5 minor penalties. Weber State was able to capitalize on two early power play opportunities and carried all the momentum from 4 unanswered goals. LBSU didn’t quit as Matthew Dove scored to cut the lead in half midway through the 3rd, but the penalties proved to be too much to overcome. Weber State went on to win 6-3.

Saturday January 19, 2019: Long Beach State (LBSU) 5 AT University of Denver (DU) 6

This game was another opportunity for Long Beach to play against a University of Denver team ranked 17th in the region. The game was very entertaining from start to finish. Long Beach scored two first period goals coming off the sticks of Ryan Osterkamp and Matthew Dove, but University of Denver scored two as well both coming from David Waterman. Osterkamp would strike again for LBSU late in the 2nd period to take a 3-2 lead. Although the lead wouldn’t last very long, as Denver would tie it yet again before the buzzer. Like Friday night, the Beach spent a lot of time killing off penalties. They took ten minor penalties, which is equivalent to spending a third of the game in the penalty box. Long Beach was determined to get the lead back, and Luke Miller would do just that by scoring a goal two minutes in to the 3rd period. Again, Denver would respond right away. Except this time, they got three unanswered goals from Chris Lugg to take a 6-4 lead. Ryan Schlerf scored a beautiful power play goal, making it a one goal game with 5 minutes remaining. The players remained hungry to tie the game, but ultimately couldn’t get one past the University of Denver Goaltender. LBSU got a solid effort in net as Tyler Gealy stopped 33 of 39 shots on goal.

Sunday January 20, 2019: Long Beach State (LBSU) 4 AT Colorado State University (CSU) 3

The third game of the week for the Long Beach State hockey team, brought yet another close contest. In the opening period both teams seemed to be figuring each other out. LBSU would gain the lead on a 1st period goal from Nico Santoro. After that, the play opened up a bit with the teams trading goals in the middle frame.  Long Beach scored twice in the period on goals from Brandon Hoeksema and Nicholas Schrepfer. However, they surrendered three during that time, which made it a 3-3 tie yet again heading into the final period. It seemed as though LBSU learned from the first two games and played a more disciplined 3rd period. Matthew Dove scored the game winning goal with just under 5 minutes to play. It was his third straight game with a goal. Long Beach also received a great performance in net from Adam Moroz who stopped 35 of 38 shots.

Monday January 21, 2019: Long Beach State (LBSU) 6 VS Metro State University- Denver (MSU) 9

It seemed as though Long Beach had all the momentum, until penalties once again became an issue. Metro State was able to score 4 unanswered goals, 3 of which were on the power play. It was a very physical and hostile contest, with both teams sustaining major penalties. The Beach never gave up and kept the game close throughout. It was an 8-6 late in the 3rd period, when MSU scored an empty net goal to seal the win. Matthew Hoeksema had a standout game with 2 goals and 1 assist, he was awarded 3rd star of the game.
