The Waterloo Siskins sit on top of the Midwest conference of the GOJHL midway through the season after winning their 6th straight game Sunday at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex. The Siskins mid-season record stands at 17 Wins 6 losses and 2 overtime losses-good enough for a first place tie with the Stratford Warriors.
The Siskins exchanged goals with the Bombers in the first 16 seconds of play. Brampton scored 7 seconds into the game off a Siskins zone faceoff. Waterloo responded 9 seconds later when SAM SPAEDT scored on a one timer from ALEX LYCETT (See Photo #1 of Dec 2, 2018 Album). Siskins forward Owen LANE (Games First Star) gave Waterloo the lead just over half way through the first frame however Brampton responded before the end of the period with an equalizer.
Waterloo netminder MATT ONUSKA made a number of key saves in the first frame to keep the Bombers to just two goals (See Photo #2 of Dec 2, 2018 Album).
From there, Waterloo dominated the Bombers outshooting Brampton 18-2 in the second frame. The Brampton netminder kept the game tied until OWEN LANE scored his second goal of the game with 15 seconds left in the period to give Waterloo a 3-2 lead.
Waterloo kept the heat on in the third period. TYLER DAM scored 5 minutes into the frame jumping into the rush and burying a shot high glove side on the Brampton goalie. Siskins defensemen DOMINICK DIPONIO took away whatever hope Brampton had left when he scored just over a minute later to make the game 5-2 (See Photo #3 of Dec 2, 2018 Album). JACK CHUMLEY rounded out the Siskins scoring with a power play marker of his own. Waterloo outshot Brampton 47-24 on their way to the 6-2 victory.
Friday night, Waterloo took on the Listowel Cyclones on the road in a game that meant first place to the winner-even for the night! Waterloo took two early penalties against Listowel but killed them off backstopped by some great goaltending from MATT ONUSKA. Waterloo gave up the game’s first 10 shots before scoring on their first sent towards the Listowel net when CURTIS RAWN finished a 2 on 1 rush. Waterloo then scored on their next two shots when TYLER DAM scored his first of three goals on the night off the back end and JOSEPH SERPA scored his first of the season. The final score of the game ended up 7-1 Waterloo-an anticlimactic result for a game with first place on the line. Other Siskins goal scores were OWEN LANE and SAM CHERRY.
Waterloo heads into this weekend’s game tied for first with Stratford and riding a 6 game winning streak. Waterloo is in ELMIRA Saturday night before returning to the WMRC Sunday at 1:30 for a rematch against the 2017-18 Sutherland Cup Champion LISTOWEL CYCLONES.
