Waterloo completed a three game weekend sweep with wins against Brampton, Brantford and Kitchener this past weekend pulling the Siskins to within two points of the Listowel Cyclones for first place in the highly competitive Midwest conference of the GOJHL.

Sunday’s Game against the Kitchener Dutchmen was Waterloo’s third game in three days and the workload seemed to show as Waterloo fell behind 2-0 early with goals from SEAN KAWALAEC and TYLER HARRISION. Shots were even in the first frame but Waterloo couldn’t solve Dutchmen goalie LUCUS PATTON. The second period didn’t get much better for Waterloo as the Dutchmen had the edge in play and made the score 3-0, 7:39 into period #2. The Siskins opted to put MATT ONUSKA in net after the Kitchener power play marker to see if that might help turn the tide (See Photo #2 of Nov 18, 2018 Album).

Waterloo got on the board with 40 seconds left in the second period when SAM CHERRY found the back of the net on a helper from newly acquired forward JEFF SCHRATTNER (See Photo #1 of Nov 18, 2018 Album).  Waterloo summoned the energy necessary and started to take the game to Kitchener in the 3rd directing 14 shots at the Kitchener netminder. A power play goal by TYLER DAM then another by ALEX LYCETT with less than two minutes left in regulation brought Waterloo even with Kitchener forcing overtime.

Kitchener held the edge in OT play until Waterloo’s leading scorer SAM CHERRY ripped a shot into the top right corner at 3:12 of the OT frame (See Photo #3 of Nov 18, 2018 Album) to complete the Siskins comeback and top off a 6 point weekend.

Friday night was on the road in Brampton with Waterloo desperately looking for a win. Brampton had upset the then undefeated Waterloo squad the past time Waterloo was in town. Two goals within 19 seconds of each other in the last minute of the first period ended up being the difference for Waterloo as they took a 3-2 lead and never trailed in the game again. The line of OWEN LANE (2 goals/2 assists), SAM CHERRY (1 goal/2 assists) and CHRISTAIN TAYLOR (1 goal/2 assists) were a “one line wrecking crew” for Waterloo. JUSTIN ZUBER rounded out the score for Waterloo in a 5-2 win.

Saturday saw Waterloo in Brantford to face the 99ers for the second time this season. Waterloo jumped to a 6-2 lead early in the 3rd period then took their foot off the gas allowing Brantford back in the game at 6-4. An empty net goal by Waterloo’s CURTIS RAWN with A 1:21 left brought a close to the 99er comeback try which ended 7-4 in favor of Waterloo. ALEX LYCETT had a big night for Waterloo with 2 goals and 2 assists.

The Siskins are next on the ice at home Sunday hosting the Brantford 99ers at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex with game time starting at 1:30.
