BRANTFORD RED SOX AT TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS
by Anne Chamberlain
It was a scorcher today at Christie Pits. And by that, I am not just referring to the weather. In a game which had no bearing on where the Brantford Red Sox were going to end up in the standings regarding the playoffs but did for the Toronto Maple Leafs, the home team won by a score of – get ready for this – 20 to 7.
Brantford scored first in the top of the 1st inning when David Mendham scored on a wild pitch. Toronto answered back with 3 runs in the bottom of the same inning. Sox tied it up in the top of the 3rd inning when both Wayne Forman and Deandre Asbury-Heath were brought home on a RBI single by Dan Jagdeo. Those pesky Leafs roared back with 6 runs in the bottom of the same inning to pull ahead 9-3.
Then the Sox slowly started getting back into the game in the top of the 5th inning. A sacrifice fly by Nic Burdett brought David Mendham home. Score was now 9-4 still for Toronto. In the top of the 7th Burdett came home on a single by Jagdeo. 2 other Sox runs, both unearned, were scored by Jagdeo and Andris Rizquez. It was now 9-7. Toronto made in 10–7 in the bottom of the same inning.
Then the bottom of the 8th happened. 14 Toronto batters came to bat. 10 runs later and the inning was finally over. Every player for the Leafs scored in this inning at least once. But the Sox showed some fighting spirit in the top of the 9th. They loaded the bases (Jagdeo, Anthony Rizquez, Nic Burnell). However, they were left there.
Taking the loss for the Sox was starter Blake Kauer. Also throwing for Brantford was Andris Rizquez and Kurt Horne. (Note: Horne also pinch hit for Andris Rizquez in the 9th inning).
Kudos to position players Kauer and Rizquez for giving the pitching staff's arms a much needed rest heading into the playoffs.
