TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS  AT BRANTFORD RED SOX

 Friday, July 27, 2018

by Anne Chamberlain

Great crowd on hand last night at Arnold Anderson Stadium on BrantTaxi night. One of the teams playing would be ending their winless streak. Unfortunately, it wasn’t the Brantford Red Sox. They were defeated by a score of 2-0 by the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs.

First run of the game didn’t come until the top of the 5th inning. Toronto’s Zac Orchard, who reached 3rd base due to a passed ball, came home to score. The 2nd and final run of the game came in the top of the 8th inning. Adam Hornostaj was on 1st base due to a walk. He was advanced to 2nd when Grant Tamane got on 1st base on an error made by the Sox shortstop. Jonathan Solazzo then singled to first which advanced Hornostaj to 3rd and Tamane to 2nd. Then something surprising happened. Brantford pitcher Stefan Strecker who came into the game in the 8th inning balked. That brought Hornostaj home.

Brantford’s starting pitcher, Euclides Leyer (he’s getting stronger each game he throws), was charged with the loss. He threw for 7 1/3 innings giving up 2 runs on only 2 hits, walked 1 and struck out 8. Strecker finished the game for Brantford.

Earning the win for Toronto was starter Justin Cicatello. He went 8 innings giving up 0 runs on 7 hits, walking 2 and striking out 5. Dustin Richardson came into the game for the 9th inning. He earned the save.

Brantford left 12 runners on base. Toronto left 7 on. Both teams made 2 errors.

Euclides Leyer is in 4th place on the league’s strikeout leader board with 66.
