Last night #88, Dave Dix, was presented with his golden bat for being one of the IBL’s top 100. Several of his family members were in attendance including his son, Jeff, who was a catcher for the Sox. I can only speak for myself but I don’t get tired of seeing the look of pride on the players’ faces when they get their bat. Well done Dave (I would have written Dixie but not sure which way he spells it.) This was the upside of the evening. Now for the downside. The Brantford Red Sox were defeated 11-5 by the visiting Burlington Herd.
Burlington chalked up the first run of the evening in the top of the 1st inning. Brantford answered back with 4 in the bottom of the 2nd inning. The Herd stampeded back by scoring 3 runs in the top of the 3rd, 3 runs in the top of the 4th, 1 in the top of the 5th and 2 runs in the top of the 7th. The Sox shook the dust off and scored one in the bottom of the 7th inning. Burlington added one more to their tally and the final run of the game in the top of the 9th inning.
Brantford’s 5 runs were all scored by different players. Getting those runs were Ricky Murray, Nic Burdett, David Mendham, Andris Rizquez and Anthony Rizquez. Getting an honourable mention is manager Wayne Forman who pinch hitted for Blake Kauer in the bottom of the 9th inning. Wayne got walked to first base. (I did wonder why he took batting practice last night and why #12 was walking around with his uniform on).
For Burlington, Vaughn Bryan and Nolan Pettipiece led the way with 3 runs each. With 2 runs each were Justin Gideon and Mattingly Romanin. Casey Bouillere-Howard had the other Herd run.
Brantford starter, Matt Martinow, gave up 6 runs on 7 hits, walked 1 in the 3 1/3 innings he pitched. Kurt Horne threw for the next 1 1/3 innings, Matt Betts for 2 1/3 innings and Tanner Guindon finished the game.
Chris Boatto started for Burlington. He threw for 7 innings allowing 5 runs on 6 hits, walked 4 and struck out 4. Casey Bouillere-Howard, who was the designated hitter for the Herd last night, pitched the final 1 2/3 innings.
Burlington left 12 runners on while Brantford left 7.
The only team at present who have lost more in a row than Brantford (they have lost 6 straight games) is Toronto. The Leafs have lost their last 9 games. One of these 2 teams will snap their losing streak this Friday, July 27th as the 2 teams meet each other at Arnold Anderson Stadium in Brantford for a scheduled 8 o’clock start. It’s Brant Taxi night so be among the first 200 fans and you’ll get in free.
