(ABC 6 News) – The Austin Bruins’ 2017-2018 junior hockey season ended on Friday in the NAHL Central Division Finals—but the hockey careers for many Bruins’ players will continue beyond SPAMtown.

Four Austin Bruins players were selected in Phase II of the USHL Draft. Phase II of the USHL draft is for hockey players of all ages eligible to play junior hockey and not protected by a USHL team.

Bruins center Alex Mella (4th round, 51st overall by Madison), defenseman Jaden Shields (5th round, 73rd overall by Dubuque), defenseman Danny Petrick (15th round, 231st overall by Madison), and center Xander Lamppa (15th round, 244th overall by Waterloo) were drafted on Tuesday.

This past season, Shields led all Bruins defensemen with 29 points (12 goals, 17 assists). Shields also registered a +14 rating—tied for second on the team with Lamppa, a former John Marshall Rocket, who scored 11 goals and totaled 9 assists in his first season in Austin.

Mella scored 17 goals and accumulated 10 assists during the regular season, but he played a key part in the Bruins’ run for a Central Division Title, scoring two goals in seven postseason games.

Petrick played with the Bruins for the past two seasons. In 78 games in Austin, Petrick tallied 19 goals and 16 assists. This season, Petrick led the Bruins with 10 power play goals.

ADDITIONAL BRUINS NOTES: Austin Bruins goalkeeper coach Al Rooney has accepted the head coaching job with the Chippewa Steel. In his lone season as an assistant in Austin, Rooney’s regular starting goalie, Alex Schilling, earned the NAHL’s Central Division Goalie of the Year award.

ADDITIONAL DRAFT NOTES: In Monday’s first Phase of the USHL Draft, the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders drafted Rochester Century sophomore defenseman Bennett Zmolek in the second round (21st overall). Zmolek’s older brother Will previously played with the RoughRiders. The first phase of the USHL Draft is for “Future” age players only (U-17 players for next season).
