Kitchener, Ont. – Team OMHA Black battled to a well-deserved overtime win against Team GTHL Red in a gripping 4-3 game Saturday evening during Game 12 of the 2018 OHL Gold Cup at Activa Sportsplex in Kitchener, Ontario.
Team GTHL Red drew first blood in an unassisted goal thanks to Michael Renwick 3:41into the first.
Cameron Butler answered back shortly after to tie it up for Team OMHA Black with a man advantage from Jacob Vreugdenhill.
Team GTHL Red pulled ahead during the second period, extending their lead 3-1. Eric Russel scoring first, unassisted with three left on the clock and Cole Perfetti knocked one home from Eric Russel.
Quinton Byfield scored on the power play from Jake Murray, Alec Belanger for Team OMHA Black.
And with a little under a minute left Brody Waters scored on the powerplay to send Team OMHA Black to overtime from Jake Murray, Alec Belanger.
Needing just 2 minutes in overtime, Cameron Butler scored the game winning goal for Team OMHA Black from Alec Belanger, Quinton Byfield.
Players of the game were Erik Russell for Team GTHL Red and Cameron Butler for Team OMHA Black.

“It’s good we let it slip a little bit today but we worked hard the whole tournament to put ourselves in a position to play the gold medal game which is good we just have to come hard tomorrow and win it,” said Erik Russell, Team GTHL Red.
“It was a crazy feeling it was great to complete the comeback, everyone was firing in the end it just was a really good team win,” said Cameron Butler, from Team OMHA Black.

The OHL Gold Cup is an annual showcase event featuring top under-16 talent in Ontario. As part of the Hockey Canada Program of Excellence (POE), players competing at the OHL Gold Cup have an opportunity to be evaluated for invitation to the national under-17 development camp, where Hockey Canada gathers the top talent from across the country to introduce players to the national team program and provide a foundation of development as they progress through the POE.
