If you’re looking to improve your hockey skills and become a better player, the best place to start is off the ice. You might not know it, but there are many great personality traits and skills that can easily be applied when playing hockey. In addition to ongoing training, practice and skill development, here are some non-hockey related skills that will help make you a great hockey player.

Teamwork

This one is probably one of the most important skills. To excel on the ice, you should be able to work with the strengths of your team, fellow players and coaches. If you are someone that can identify the strengths and weaknesses and work cohesively with your team – on the ice and off, it can have great benefits in all aspects of your life.

Resiliency

Being a resilient player and being able to bounce back after a poor shift or game can help you to improve over time. Assess your performance and determine what you could have improved on instead of dwelling on poor performance – it will allow you to learn from your mistakes instead of letting them hinder your next game.

Strength

Being a great hockey player means having strength – both mentally and physically. World-renowned players work hard to maintain their physical ability and to be able to perform during physically demanding practices and games. Great players also have the mental ability to take on a new challenge or experience. Whether it be going up against a really great team or overcoming a challenging play.

Focus

Great players are focused on their goals and don't let distractions get in the way. Think about what your hockey goals might be and remember to stay focused on achieving them. Don't be distracted or go in with too many varying expectations – stay focused on one thing you'd like to accomplish, and you'll quickly see the results.
