Pure. Dominance.

The D3 Central Michigan Chippewas picked up their 15th win of the season in a dominant fashion as they downed cross-state rival Western Michigan 19-0.  The Chippewas came into this game seeking a series sweep as they took the previous game by a final score of 9-2. CMU saw a few lineup changes in today’s game as freshman goaltender Collin Smith would get his first career college start in net and freshman Jake Schott also earned significant playing time.

Unlike the first game of the series where the Chippewas came out slow, they came out on fire in the first period of the second game. Jason Pischke would kick off the scoring for CMU as he gave his team the lead less than two minutes into the game. Just moments later, Philip Fazio scored his fourth goal of the season to put the Chips up 2-0 on the Broncos. Central Michigan was dominating the game early in the first period as they outplayed Western in every aspect of the game. They kept the pressure on the Broncos and starting goaltender Seth Maloney and it paid off in a big way, as Nick Wink was able to put one in the back of the net to put the Chips up 3-0.  Three goals in the first period weren’t enough for them as Jake Schott put one by Maloney to score his first career college goal and send his team to the locker room up by four.

The second period would tell a similar story as the Chippewas came out firing on all cylinders. They applied great offensive pressure early on and it proved to be lethal yet again as CMU was able to increase their four-goal lead to five, as Nick Wink was able to put one in and score his second of the game. The bleeding didn’t stop there as the Chips would score six more goals in the second period; two by Nathan “Gator Allgaier, and one goal each for Shane Agnello, Ben Hryciuk, Brennan Martin, and Ryan Tyrer. Another dominant period would be in the books as the Chippewas would take a commanding 11-0 lead into the locker room with still another period yet to be played.

When the third period began, the game was all but over as the two teams took the ice. Although the Chippewas had 11 goals already on the board, they still were not satisfied. Jake Schott scored his second goal of the game and of his collegiate career to put his team up by twelve with lots of time still left in the final period of play. Goaltender Collin Smith had been playing outstanding for the Chippewas as he was stopping everything that came his way, which in result gave his teammates more momentum to score a few more goals. Nick Wink was able to complete the hat trick about halfway through the third period as he and his team continued to dominate the game up 13-0 at this point. Central Michigan would not let up at all throughout the rest of the game as they put six more goals into the back of the net to seal a 19-0 victory over the Broncos and increase their record to 15-4 on the season.

A big congratulations to goaltender Collin Smith who posted his first career shutout in his first career start, to Jake Schott on his first and second career goals, and to Dalton Sutherland on getting his 100th career point! Stay tuned as the D3 CMU Chippewas have a home and home series this upcoming weekend (Nov. 17 and 18) against the University of Michigan – Flint.
