Philadelphia, Pennsylvania- The Hokies came back with one win and one lose against D1 Temple University this weekend. The Hokies lost in overtime 3-2 on Friday but came back to win 6-4 on Saturday evening.
On Friday’s game, Hokies’ Brendan Hoey put Virginia tech on the board first with 14 minutes left and ended the first period 1-0. Temple was able to earn two goals with just 3 minutes left in the second period, making the end of second period score 2-1. Hokies’ Logan Simonian tied up the game early into the third period with a goal assisted by Miles Miller and ended the third period 2-2, going into overtime. 35 seconds into the 5 minute 3 v 3 overtime, Temple was able to put one in the top of the net, winning the game 3-2.
On Saturday’s game, Temple put the only two goals in during the first period, making the end of first period score 2-0.
Virginia Tech game back strong and owned the second period, starting with Felipe Rodriquez scoring a goal assisted by Stephen Gerke 4 minutes in, making the score 2-1. Hokies’ Mason Wildgrube assisted by Trevor Murphy followed suite 2 minutes later and put one in the net making the score 2-2. Temple was able to respond less than a minute later, making the score 3-2. Virginia Tech wasted no time in the crease with a goal by Hokies’ Felipe Rodriquez, assisted by Mason Wildgrube making the score 3-3. With 6 minutes left Hokies’ Mason Wildgrube, with an assist by Felipe Rodriquez, gave VT the lead, 4-3 at the end of the second period.
Hokies’ Felipe Rodriquez assisted by Andrew Calandra scored 30 seconds into the third period, making the score 5-3. 15 seconds later Hokies’ Felipe Rodriquez, assisted by Stephen Gerke, earned his first hat trick of the weekend and put the score at 6-2. 3 minutes later Temple was able to respond back with a goal and end the game with a score of 6-3.
Virginia Tech Hockey is now 6-4-1 and will be back home next weekend at the Berglund Center playing against the Stevenson Mustangs on Saturday 11/4 at 2 pm and James Madison Dukes on Sunday 11/5 at 2pm.
