The St. Catharines Falcons ended their home-losing streak with a 4-1 win over the Caledonia Corvairs Friday night.
With the win, St. Catharines is now first place in the GOJHL Golden Horseshoe Conference. Caledonia entered the match as the first-place team.
Falcons goaltender Owen Savory turned away 46 of 47 shots against, earning himself first-star honours. St. Catharines ended the game with 20 shots.
“This is a step in the right direction,” said Savory. “After a string of four losses at home, we wanted to make sure we brought our A-game tonight against (Caledonia).”
Forward Tanner Main opened the scoring for the Falcons in the first period. After a string of penalties, forward Zach Lawrence and defenseman Matt Busby added power-play markers also in the first period. The St. Catharines power-play went 2-for-7 on the night.
“It’s so important to have the power-play clicking,” said Savory. “We want teams to fear our special teams and we did that tonight.”
St. Catharines forward Nathan Smilsky added the only goal of the second period, capitalizing off a breakout pass from rookie forward Jaleel Adams.
Falcons Head Coach Dan Fitzgerald was impressed with his team’s bounce back after a string of losses at home.
“I thought it was a terrific team effort,” said Fitzgerald. “We battled with and for each other all game. We kept a lot of their shots to the outside and when they got quality chances (Savory) came up huge.”
The Falcons penalty kill also performed well Friday night, killing 10 of 11 infractions. Corvairs forward Sean O’Brien scored his team’s only goal on the power-play in the third period.
“The effort was terrific and our attention to detail was great,” said Fitzgerald. “We still need to tighten up on the discipline side, but it was still a good win.”
St. Catharines is back in action Sunday afternoon when they hit the road to take on the Pelham Panthers at 3pm.
