CATCHING UP WITH BRIAN GIBBONS
Date: Jun 18, 2018

Dorchester, MA- Kyle Penney scored an extra attacker goal with 14.9 seconds remaining to help the Boston Jr. Bruins erase a two-goal deficit to tie the Cape Cod Whalers in Mass Select 18U division play on Saturday.
Jay O’Brien put the Whalers on the board midway through the first period when he skated down the left side and cut to the slot before shooting the puck past Bruins goalie Sean Dynan. Ryan Stevens received credit for the assist.
The goaltenders kept the second period scoreless until Aidan McDonough and John Murray set up O’Brien with 1:07 remaining in the period.
Thirty seconds later, the Bruins answered back when Andranik Armstrong lit the lamp with assists from Kyle Penney and Thomas Samuelson.
McDonough scored from Evan Googins and Tristan Amonte with 15:15 on the clock to restore the Whalers’ two goal lead.
Once again, the Bruins responded when Matthew Egan sent the puck to Matthew Toporowski behind the net. Toporwoski then fed it to Velan Nandhakamura in the slot, and he banged it home with 8:22 remaining.
The Bruins called timeout with just under a minute to play and pulled Sean Dynan in favor of an extra attacker. The move paid off as Penney tied the game with 14.9 seconds on the clock. Armstrong and Christian Hayes assisted.
Both teams played really well,” noted Bruins coach Bret Tyler. “It’s early in the season coming off the summer break, but it was an extremely good game on both sides.
“We were down by two goals and the kids were really into it,” he continued. “They never gave up, they kept it simple, and they were be able break through against a really good team like the Whalers.”
“Our game plan was just to get every shot on net,” said Kyle Penney. “Armstrong and Samuelson were both doing their part to keep it down low and we got a nice dirty goal. The boys gutted it out and we played really well. It was going against us going into the third period, but we all persevered.”
