Quincy, MA- The Cape Cod Whalers received four goals from four different players to knock off the Boston Bulldogs 4-1 in 18-and-under action on Sunday afternoon.

Both teams flew out of the gate, creating plenty of chances to break the game open, but goaltenders Luke Garrity and Matt Lane proved equal to the task and the first period ended in a scoreless tie.

“[The Bulldogs] came out hard,” noted Whalers defenseman Jack Rathbone. “We tried to establish a physical presence early in the game, but they countered it well.”

The Bulldogs got on the board first when Joey Pasquini and Emmet Powell set up Jericho Petkovich in the high slot and Petkovich fired a shot through traffic that beat Lane on the glove side 1:58 into the period.

Ian Murphy tied the game with 4:06 on the clock when Trevor Spence sent him charging down the right wing. Spence cut in toward the net and sailed the puck past an outstretched Garrity.

“We’ve got a pretty resilient bunch and it starts with the guy in net. Matt Lane played a great game for us and once we started getting the puck up front, the forwards started creating pressure in front of their net,” said Rathbone.

Less than two minutes later, Cameron Lemanski sent Jerry Harding down the left wing. Harding caught Peter Garret with a pass and Garrett knocked it home.

The Bulldogs pressed hard at the beginning of the third period, desperate to tie the game, but naturally, Matt Lane and the Whalers would not give an inch. Rather, Evan Googins gave the Whalers a 3-1 lead with 9:29 to play when he scored from Ian Murphy and Cameron Lemanski.

The Bulldogs nearly seized the momentum and ignited a comeback with a breakaway in the closing minutes but Lane made a huge save to preserve the two-goal lead. Instead, Aidan McDonough iced the game with a goal from Jayson Dobay with 38 seconds on the clock.

“It’s fun playing teams like [the Bulldogs,]” stated Rathbone. “That's why you play fall hockey, to get good games before the prep season and anytime you play these guys, you know it'll be a good game.”
