OTTAWA, ONT. —
The Kanata Lasers continued their busy offseason on Thursday night, when they acquired Russian-Canadian forward Kiryll Ulanov from the OJHL's Toronto Patriots in exchange for goaltender Ryan Franz.
Ulanov, 18, joins the Lasers after putting up 15 points (six goals, nine assists) as a rookie with Toronto in 2016-17.
"He's a 6-foot-4, 210-pound '99 (and) we're expecting him to come in, use his body and put up some points," said Kanata general manager Ian Henderson. "We were super excited when his name came up in the trade offer — he has the ability, but didn't get a lot of ice time last year."
A Russian-Canadian dual citizen, Ulanov is the son of former NHL player and current KHL assistant coach Igor Ulanov.
"I just got off the phone with him, and he said he's really excited to be coming into Ottawa and joining the CCHL," continued Henderson.
The move was Kanata's second of the day, as the Lasers also traded for Nepean's Ugo Roik earlier Thursday afternoon.
"I feel better (about our roster) now than when I started," admitted Henderson, who joined the Lasers in early June. "We've solidified the goaltending, added some junior-A experience — Roik is a good leader with a couple years' experience — and I like where we sit."
Heading to the Patriots and OJHL is goaltender Ryan Franz; the Richmond Hill, Ont. native appeared in 25 games last season with the Lasers, registering a 4.11 goals-against-average and .888 save-%.
